The western to end all westerns is nog altijd fascinerend, alhoewel het trage verteltempo soms iets teveel wordt. Superieure cinematografie, voortreffelijke vertolkingen van Cardinale, Jason Robards sr., Henry Fonda en Charles Bronson. Een ware Opera des Doods, op de legendarische en kippenvelopwekkende score van Ennio Morricone.
